Two Mt. SAC students were held at gunpoint while sitting in a car on the corner of San Jose Hills Road and Grand Avenue in the late afternoon on March 17.
Director of Public Safety Jeff Parker said there was an altercation between the victim and the suspect and shortly after, the suspect was placed under arrest for armed robbery.
The victim, who chose to remain unidentified for safety issues said that her and her boyfriend were sitting in a car with the windows down at about 4:30 p.m. when a suspect allegedly held a gun inside the window and demanded all wallets, cell phones, and money.
The victim said that he told the couple that he would smoke them if they didn't cooperate.
"My boyfriend was like, 'You're really going to rob us in daylight?', and then he hit my boyfriend in the face," she said.
After that, the victim said the suspect fled up San Jose Hills Road after grabbing a cell phone and wallet out of the back seat through an open window.
The boyfriend of the victim said that after the suspect grabbed their possessions he fled up San Jose Hills Road. He then followed the suspect in his car. That was when the boyfriend started his car and started pursuing the suspect. He began to coax the suspect to give him their possessions back, and the suspect had a sudden change of heart and began to hand back some of the stolen items.
According to the couple, as the suspect approached the car, the victim's boyfriend grabbed his pepper spray and sprayed the suspect in the face, tackled him to the ground and held him until Walnut Sheriffs Department arrived a few moments later.
The victim's boyfriend expressed a few words of wisdom for people who might find themselves in a similar situation.
"Always have pepper spray in your car," he said.
