Last Monday, LAMBDA celebrated World AIDS day by providing students with free HIV/AIDS testing.
In its second year as an annual event, the club stood outside Bldg. 9-C passing out condoms and encouraging students to get tested. All students were invited as a DJ blasted music through the speakers.
"With HIV and AIDS on the rise, it's important to find what their status is to prevent further attraction of the disease," Virgilio Doniza, ICC representative for LAMBDA, said.
Los Angeles County Health Services came on campus to give the free tests for the event.
"At first, it was kind of slow," Doniza said. "When I came back, there were a lot of people. I guess it took others to be there for conformity."
"It took will power," Albert Serna, LAMBDA treasurer, said. "We had to talk to student life and get a permit, and then, we got the DJ. It was kind of difficult."
Although difficult, the club hopes to host similar events monthly.
According to Serna, the timing for the event was perfect, but regardless of the day, they would have held the event anyway.
"Fifty-three people got tested," Serna said. "Fifty-three more people know their status."
