As the Mounties' men and women's track teams can see the conference finals right around the corner, they both came in second place in the five-way meet between Mt. SAC, Cerritos, Pasadena, El Camino, and L.A. Southwest on March 27.
The men's team put up a score of 184 as they came up short to El Camino's 197, and suffered their first conference loss in 12 years, putting an end to their record streak.
"We competed very well," head coach Doug Todd said. "I feel like the team is really peaking, moving in a good position for the post-season."
Mt. SAC freshman Rafael Dominguez helped the men's team by putting up a time of 1:56.88 in a first place finish in the 800-meter run. In the one-mile run, teammate Javier Ceja got a second place finish behind El Camino's Steven Calise, while getting a third place finish in the two-mile run behind Calise and first place winner Daniel Clifford-Sorenson from Cerritos.
In the men's pole vaults, sophomore Matt Todd won the event, elevating to a personal best 16 feet, edging out teammate Andrew County (15-6), and putting himself back in first in state ranks.
"I had a good practice previously," Matt said. "I tried to switch to a different pole, one that'll shoot me up a little higher. I was number one in the state for a while. Last week a guy beat my mark, but this puts me back at number one."
The women's team also placed in second with a score of 196 behind Cerritos' 219.
After a record showing in the men's side of the pole vault, sophomore Megan Hill set the bar higher and vaulted a Mt. SAC women's record 11 feet 9 inches to win the event. An excited Hill said, "I'm definitely going to keep going higher."
Freshman runner Christine Cortez got two first place finishes on the day. She won the 800-meter run with a 2:26.59 time. Six seconds behind her was Cerritos runner Gabriela Rubi. On the one-mile run Cortez had a first place time of 5:21.80.
"I didn't know how much distance I had, but I had to beat this girl," Cortez said. "I feel good."
Sophomore jumper Adrienne Lewis, placed first in two of the events, and was three inches away from placing first in another. Pasadena sophomore An'nisa Faquir, won the long jump with a mark of 18 feet 1 inches while Lewis came in second with a mark of 17 feet 10 1/4 inches. For the triple jump Lewis placed in first (35-5 1/2).
Before realizing that these were both personal records for her, a humble Lewis said, "My jumps were ok, pretty average. Overall pretty good, just the usual." Lewis also placed first in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet.
Allyson Stone got a first place finish in the Women's 100-meter Hurdles in a close race where she posted a 15.32 against the 15.59 time of Erin Straughter of Cerritos. And a successful day for both men's and women's hammer throwers, showed sophomores Franklin Robinson (174-2) and Daniela Coria (153-9) both get first place finishes.
