Mt. SAC's newly elected president, John C. Nixon, has had over 30 years experience in the educational field as a faculty member, administrator, and as a former vice president of Santa Ana Community College.
Students such as Nohemi Flores, 19, biology major, are comforted by Nixon's experience in the educational field. In the wake of recent budget cuts, Flores said it is reassuring that Mt. SAC has been able to avoid large disruptions and said Nixon has handled the situation very well.
In response to the positive acceptance of his new position, Nixon said, "It feels good to have confidence in me to provide leadership. I believe Mt. SAC is a marvelous college."
Music professor and department chair Jason Chevalier said he is thrilled Nixon has become president, and has "heard great commentary from faculty" in regard to Nixon.
Chevalier also said he was personally touched when Nixon and his wife flew to Washington, D.C. to watch a Mt. SAC musical performance.
"It was very supportive of him," Chevalier said.
In regards to the recent election and according to www.mtsac.edu, Board of Trustees President Dr. Manuel Baca said, "Dr. Nixon has the experience, vision, and leadership to advance Mt. SAC to the next level of excellence and distinction."
Beneath Nixon's experience and passion for his career lies a man who is also personally dedicated to serving the students and supporting the education of others.
"I think I know what it is to be a student," Nixon said. "I chose this career because I believe in what education means to people and to society, and I am very happy with my choice of career."
As a child, Nixon said he dreamed of tackling the business world. But as he journeyed through his education, becoming an editor for his high school newspaper during his junior and senior years, Nixon said he channeled his love for writing and literature. He went on to earn three degrees in English.
"It is great he knows our concern," Flores said. "I think it is a key role for him as a president that he is someone easy to relate to."
