The convention consisted of numerous workshops, officer elections, guest speakers, and socials. The official duration was from Thurs., April 12 to Sat., April 14 and included 3,725 members in 585 chapters around the world.
At the awards gala Mt. SAC was recognized as one of the top 100 chapters of Phi Theta Kappa, having an Outstanding Chapter Member, Warren Hsiao, an Outstanding Chapter President, Leanne Dogoldogol, and an Outstanding Chapter Advisor, Maya Alavarez-Galvan.
Country music artist Kevin Sharp was the first key note address of the convention's first general session and spoke about the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the American Cancer Society's Relay-for-Life. Sharp is a cancer survivor.
Phi Theta Kappa is the single largest donor to the ACS and has raised over $2 million for cancer research since 2002.
"I commend you Phi Theta Kappans for your overwhelming aid to the ACS," Sharp said. "Continue the fight through all your great efforts."
Day two featured Gore who gave a speech regarding the Bush administration and problems with the nation's approach to immigration, in addition to his continual campaign on global warming.
Gore emphasized the "need of acceptance of one's moral authority" in order to catalyst change.
"Our real source of power is our moral authority to search for the truth as we can determine it," said Gore.
The last day of the conference was scheduled with additional forums and workshops, an introduction to the candidates running for international office, a dinner and awards banquet, and the fourth and final general session.
Former First Lady of Egypt Dr. Jehan Sadat gave a speech during the last session. Her topics focused on women's rights and peace in the Middle East, a cause her husband, Anwar Sadat, stood for.
"I stand for peace, dignity, honor, and justice," she said.
Sadat also mentioned Jehan's law in Egypt. It requires the husband in a marriage to register his divorce and to inform his wife of it, give the wife a claim to larger alimony and child support, lengthen the period children spend in maternal custody and give women the right to retain the conjugal home if they can prove they have nowhere else to go.
The final night of the convention ended with election results, awards, and a dance.
Mt.SAC's chapter, Alpha Omega Alpha, sponsored seven students, Kiran Alvi, Sarah Dodge, Warren Hsiao, Cheryl Jameson, Jackson Lam, Michael Wilhelm, and Stephanie Yap, and one chapter advisor, Linda Diaz, to attend.
Mt.SAC students with at least a 3.5 GPA and completion of 12 transferable units are eligible to join. Contact the Phi Theta Kappa office for more information at (909) 594-5611 ext. 3004.
